In 1987 they became World Youth Champions in Chile. The 'Chileans' (as the team affectionately became known) played together until the war broke out and Yugoslavia started to fall apart. In 1991, the Croatian and Slovenian players left. Then, a year later, the father of the team, trainer Ivica Osim, resigned because the Bosnian Serbs bombed his hometown of Sarajevo. Under pressure from the international community, the rest of the team was finally sent away from the European Championships in Sweden in 1992. This meant the dramatic end to a promising Yugoslav eleven.
